Ask ten hydroponic growers whether you need reverse osmosis (RO) water and you'll get ten different answers. The truth is simpler than the debate: RO water isn't about "better" — it's about control. Here's when it's worth it and when it isn't.
What RO water actually does
Reverse osmosis strips nearly all dissolved minerals out of your water, giving you a near-blank slate. That matters because every source — tap, well, city — starts with its own background minerals. RO removes the guesswork so the only things in your nutrient solution are the nutrients you added.
"Don't guess. Measure." — Andrew Woodward
When you probably DON'T need RO
- Low-TDS tap water: If your tap reads low on a 5-in-1 meter, you can often grow beautifully without RO.
- Simple crops, forgiving setups: Lettuce and herbs tolerate a wider range than fussy fruiting plants.
When RO water is worth it
- Hard or high-TDS water: When background minerals are high, RO gives you a predictable, repeatable starting point.
- Sensitive crops or precise feeding: Dialed-in growers use RO so every PPM is intentional.
- Inconsistent municipal water: If your tap quality swings seasonally, RO smooths it out.
The bottom line
Test first, decide second. If your water is clean and consistent, save your money. If it's hard, variable, or you want total control, RO is one of the best upgrades you can make. Either way — everything begins with water.
