If you're running RO-filtered or naturally soft water in a hydro or aero system, cal-mag deficiency isn't a matter of if — it's when. Soil has clay and organic matter constantly releasing calcium and magnesium in the background. A reservoir has exactly what you put in it, and reverse osmosis strips both minerals out completely before your nutrients ever touch the water.

Why this hits hydro and aero harder than soil
- RO and soft water start at zero. Reverse osmosis removes essentially all dissolved minerals, including calcium and magnesium — so unlike soil, which has a natural mineral reserve to draw from, your reservoir has nothing until you add it.
- Fast growth means fast demand. Hydro and aero systems grow noticeably faster than soil, and that growth rate needs a steady calcium supply to build new cell walls — there's no slow-release reserve to fall back on if you fall behind.
- Potassium-heavy bloom boosters compete for uptake. Calcium, magnesium, and potassium all get absorbed through the same root pathways, so a heavy bloom booster can trigger a cal-mag deficiency even when your total nutrient levels look fine on paper.
Calcium vs. magnesium: how to tell them apart
Both deficiencies show up constantly together — the supplement is even sold as one product — but they don't look the same, and they don't show up in the same place.

Rule out pH lockout before you add anything
Both calcium and magnesium lock out well before most other nutrients do, which means a huge share of what looks like a true cal-mag deficiency is actually correct minerals sitting in the reservoir that the roots simply can't absorb. Keep hydro and aero reservoirs at 5.8–6.5 for calcium and magnesium specifically — a touch higher than the 5.8–6.2 we recommend for general feeding — and correct pH first before assuming you need to add more of either mineral.
Know your water before you dose anything
Your water is your first fertilizer, and it determines whether you need cal-mag at all:

Dosing without overcorrecting
Cal-mag toxicity is a real risk, not just a theoretical one — once combined calcium and magnesium in solution climbs past roughly 250 ppm, you start locking out other nutrients instead of fixing anything: excess calcium blocks iron and phosphorus uptake, and excess magnesium crowds out potassium. The symptoms of overdoing it can look almost identical to the deficiency you were trying to fix.
- Maintenance dose (RO or soft water, no visible symptoms): roughly 0.5 mL per liter (about 2 mL per gallon).
- Active correction (symptoms already showing): roughly 1.0–1.3 mL per liter (about 1 teaspoon, or 5 mL, per gallon).
- Add cal-mag first, before your other nutrients, to reduce the chance of precipitation in the reservoir.
- Aim for roughly 3–4 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium — most commercial cal-mag products are already formulated close to this ratio, so a standalone product is usually simpler and safer than dosing calcium and magnesium separately.

Know your water's starting mineral content, correct pH before you correct dosing, and treat the 250 ppm combined ceiling as a real limit, not a suggestion.
